This is Tuffy, a streetwise cat with a tough exterior and a heart waiting to trust again. For three months, a kind man had been feeding Tuffy in his yard.
Every day, the cat would cautiously emerge from the bushes at the back of his home for food, always keeping his distance.
Recently, the man noticed Tuffy’s condition had taken a turn for the worse.
The once proud feline looked haggard and unwell, his eyes infected and his breathing labored. Worried for the cat’s health, the man decided it was time to act.
Tuffy wasn’t ready to be caught easily, but with some patience (and a well-timed lure into a carrier), the man safely contained him and contacted the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) for help.
When Tuffy arrived at VOKRA, it was clear he’d been on his own for a long time. Likely an owned cat who had been lost or abandoned years ago, he was unneutered and in rough shape.
His eyes were severely infected, his sinuses clogged, and his body worn down from life on the streets. But despite everything, there was a spark of resilience in Tuffy’s eyes.
VOKRA volunteers got to work right away, gently cleaning his eyes and ears, applying antibiotic cream, and giving him oral medication.
At first, Tuffy was understandably defensive, but every day, he grew a little stronger—and a little more trusting.
“He’s even started letting us wash his face with a warm compress,” one volunteer shared. “He seems to enjoy it and allows us to pet his back while we clean him up.”
It’s been a week since Tuffy’s rescue, and the difference is already remarkable.
His eyes are clearer, his breathing is improving, and his personality is beginning to shine through—though he still lets the volunteers know when he’s had enough with the occasional playful wallop!
Once Tuffy is healthy enough, he will be neutered and have a full dental procedure to clean and repair his teeth.
Bloodwork will help assess his overall health. At around 12 years old, maybe older, Tuffy has survived more than many cats ever will.
But now, Tuffy’s hardest days are behind him. After spending so much time fending for himself, he’ll go to a caring foster home to learn how to trust humans again.
No cat should have to suffer as Tuffy did, but thanks to the kindness of a stranger and the dedication of VOKRA, Tuffy is one of the lucky ones.
With time, love, and a little patience, this once-forgotten street cat is on his way to the life he’s always deserved.
