A cat led rescuers to her kittens the night before Hurricane Milton and showed her gratitude in the most touching way.
The night before Hurricane Milton hit, Nikki, vice president of A Better Life-Pet Rescue, got a call about a mother cat and her kittens needing help.
The cat had been abandoned for weeks after her family moved away. She had recently given birth on the porch. With the hurricane fast approaching, Nikki and her team knew they had to move quickly to save the family.
“When I got to the house, I stepped out of the truck and started walking toward it. She came running to me, meowing,” Nikki shared.
The cat glanced at Nikki, then hurried toward the porch, stopping briefly to make sure Nikki was following her. “It felt like she was trying to lead me to something. I followed, and she showed me where the kittens were.”
There were empty bowls on the porch, and the kittens were hiding behind a pile of items. Nikki placed food in a carrier, and the mother cat calmly walked in, as if she knew they were in good hands.
“I gently pulled the babies out from behind the pile and put them in the carrier with their mom. When we got home, she ate two more cans of food. She was so hungry. She looked relieved to be inside with her babies.”
The feline family of eight was rescued just in time. Through the storm’s heavy winds and rain, they stayed safe indoors with warm beds and plenty of food.
“Those kittens wouldn’t have made it through the hurricane. We sheltered over 30 animals in our home during the storm.”
When they first found the mother cat, she looked panicked. Now, she’s calm, resting beside her kittens. “She’s a very caring mother. She cleans them and makes sure they eat.”
Some kittens have eye infections, and one has an injured paw. With proper care, they’re getting better. The loving mom tends to all of them, but whenever she sees Nikki, she comes over for pets, like she’s thanking her.
“This is one of my favorite rescues. She’s so sweet and thankful.”
“She doesn’t have to worry about food or her babies anymore. Now, she can rest and enjoy the life she deserves.”
Even after all she’s been through, the cat still trusts her rescuers and allows them to care for her and her kittens. She rubs against their legs when they refill her food bowl, filling the room with soft purrs.
Now safe, the family of eight is thriving. The mother cat is getting stronger, and her kittens are growing fast, with healthy appetites.
Thanks to the caring rescuers, this cat family survived the storm and is starting a new life, surrounded by love and free from their past worries.
