Mittens, a tuxedo cat with a big personality, has become an unlikely social media star after spending three cold nights stranded at the top of a tall fir tree. Her heartfelt reaction to being rescued was captured on video, warming hearts across Instagram.
The ordeal unfolded in Longview, Washington, where Mittens found herself stuck high in the tree with no way down. Her desperate meows echoed through the neighborhood as she endured chilly nights alone.
Fortunately, help arrived in the form of Tom from Canopy Cat Rescue, a team dedicated to rescuing cats from precarious heights.
Tom carefully climbed the tree to reach Mittens, bringing her safely back to the ground. The video of the rescue captured the sweet moment when Mittens perched on Tom’s shoulder, purring and rubbing against him as if to say, “Thank you!” The caption on the video read, “Apparently she’s a shoulder cat. We’re so happy to help get this little girl down.”
Contrary to popular belief, cats often cannot find their way down from trees without assistance. Their claws are designed for climbing up, but not for climbing down, which can leave them stranded for days.
Canopy Cat Rescue advises against DIY rescues and recommends contacting professionals in such situations.
For adventurous cats, supervised outdoor time or leash training can help keep them safe while letting them explore the outdoors.
Thanks to her heroic rescue, Mittens is now back home, safe and sound—and just a little famous. One thing’s for sure: she won’t be climbing any trees again anytime soon!
