Edna Scott lived a quiet life in Maidstone, England, with only a few close friends and a deep love for her cat, Bluie. Though she kept much of her life private, those who knew her described her as a “real English lady” with a kind heart and a love for animals—especially cats.
For over 20 years, Edna lived in a modest home on Cornwallis Road, making weekly trips to the shops in her little car. She learned to drive in her 70s, proving she was full of surprises. But her biggest surprise came after her passing when her will revealed a stunning act of generosity.
Edna had left nearly £1 million to the Cats Protection League, a charity dedicated to helping homeless and mistreated cats. Neighbors, who knew she owned a house in London’s upmarket Holland Park, were amazed to learn its value had contributed to her remarkable gift.
Her will, written in 1993, also made special provisions for Bluie, her beloved blue Siamese cat. Edna ensured that lifelong friends would care for Bluie after her passing, bequeathing her home to them under that condition. Sadly, Bluie passed away before Edna, but her love for him shaped her decision to help countless other cats in need.
It wasn’t just cats that Edna cared for—she also left land in Somerset to the World Wildlife Fund and made gifts to several close friends. Despite her generosity, there was no mention of immediate family in her will. Those who knew her said she rarely spoke about her family, but her legacy speaks volumes about the causes she held closest to her heart.
Before retiring in the 1970s, Edna lived a life filled with adventure and service. During World War II, she served with the Red Cross, helping repatriate Japanese prisoners of war alongside Lady Mountbatten in India. Later, she became a lecturer at the English-Speaking Union in London. Her kindness and courage were woven into every chapter of her life.
A spokesman for the Cats Protection League said, “We are extremely grateful for this money. It was a wonderful gesture.” Thanks to Edna’s love for Bluie, her gift will give countless cats a second chance at life.
Edna may have lived a quiet life, but her heart was anything but small. Her story reminds us that love for animals can leave a legacy that changes lives—even long after we’re gone.
