Hero Cat Saves Family from House Fire Just in Time

A 15-year-old black-and-white cat named Bandit, who saved his family from a house fire by waking his owner.

A cat saved a family from a house fire by waking his owner with a scratch on her face.

The fire began in a pan in the kitchen of a home in West Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, on January 4.

Marie Smith, 29, explained that her 15-year-old cat, Bandit, scratched her face to alert her, giving the family time to call the fire brigade.

Although the kitchen sustained smoke damage, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the house.

A Close Call
Ms. Smith and her partner, David Howlett, were sound asleep when the fire broke out.

“Bandit scratched me to warn me about the fire in the kitchen,” said Ms. Smith. “He had never done anything like that before. I woke David as soon as I saw the fire. We got the animals out and called the fire brigade.”

The couple shares their home with a variety of pets, including three dogs, five cats, four kittens, gerbils, and hamsters.

Mr. Howlett remarked, “The fire brigade told us we were lucky. If Bandit hadn’t woken you up, the smoke could have filled your lungs, and you might not have survived.”

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service later installed two smoke alarms in the property and urged all households to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed.
